Overview – Islington Hotel
A stately Regency-style boutique property, the Islington Hotel combines nostalgic elements of a bygone era with contemporary conveniences we couldn’t live without.
Built by the wealthy Hodgson family in 1847, the Islington Hotel has a long history of being one of Hobart’s most distinguished addresses. Its enviable Davey Road ‘dress circle’ location places it within easy reach of Salamanca Place at the boulevard’s north end, and Sandy Bay to the south. These days, the heritage property is recognised as one of Tasmania’s finest small hotels, with eleven sumptuous rooms, each distinct in design yet united in their celebration of the past.
The centrepiece of the Islington Hotel is the two-storey conservatory. A recent addition to the main house, this steel-and-glass structure opens out onto the terrace, infinity pool and an acre of well-groomed gardens. There is also an honour bar and wine cellar, which pay homage to all manner of Tasmanian tipples and stocks top notch labels from Australia and beyond. Tucked behind a sandstone wall is the kitchen, where healthy farm-fresh cuisine is prepared. The hotel’s commitment to sustainability means that insofar as possible, food is sourced from local farmers, free-range producers or the organic herb and veggie patch. Guest rooms are paperless – the restaurant menu, wine list and compendium are all loaded onto your in-room iPad. Showers have the lowest water flow possible whilst maintaining good spray pressure, and halogen light bulbs throughout the property are gradually being replaced with LED versions.
Within the grand main house, you will find a wide hallway leading to a library, salon and parlour, which has an inviting log fireplace. Five guest rooms are located within this original building, while the other six are situated in the contemporary extension. Named after their aspects, rooms are furnished with Jim Thompson silk fabrics, hand-tufted rugs and all manner of invaluable artworks and antiques. The very modern marble adjoining bathrooms have heated floors, rain showers and Aesop natural bath products.
