Overview – Saffire Freycinet
A constant fixture on both national and global accommodation and architecture award winners lists, Saffire Freycinet is quite possibly the country’s best boutique hotel.
Fabricated with handsome Tasmanian timbers, anti-reflective glass and smooth, natural stone, the stingray-shaped Saffire Freycinet is organic in concept and lies discreetly low amid surrounding grey-green native bush. Its flowing lines reflect the curves of Great Oyster Bay and take nothing away from the rosy-pink Hazards Mountains in the background. If you ever dreamt of getting away from it all and having all your expectations exceeded, make sure Saffire Freycinet is on the itinerary.
This esteemed hotel is located north of Coles Bay on the rugged Freycinet Peninsula, whose spine is dotted with granite monoliths. Flanked on both sides by squeaky sand beaches, the Freycinet Peninsula is heaven for bushwalkers, fishermen, rock climbers and boating enthusiasts. Complimentary activities at Saffire include guided walks to Wineglass Bay Lookout and canoeing explorations of the wildlife-rich Swanport Estuary. Learn about and sample bivalves with local bubbly at the Freycinet Marine Oyster Farm. Guests can also contribute to the conservation of endangered Tasmanian devils by participating in visual health inspections of the iconic marsupials in and around Saffire’s open-range devil enclosure.
Signature experiences that can be arranged at additional cost include “Le Pique Nique”, which kicks off with a guided walk along the dazzling white sands of Wineglass Bay followed by a French-themed picnic. Spend a half-day on Schouten Island, which teems with Australian fur seals or challenge yourself by quad biking along four-wheel drive tracks.
Floor to ceiling windows frame gorgeous landscapes in the 20 lavishly appointed suites. Modern fittings such as a bespoke bedding, generous minibar, iPod dock and LCD TV mingle with mid-century masterpieces such as Eames and Herman Miller chairs. Recline in the bath overlooking your courtyard, or seek restorative treatment at the restful Spa Saffire. Meals are prepared by the team at Palate, the top-notch restaurant presided over by head chef Hugh Whitehouse, whose menus feature the very best ingredients Tasmania has to offer.
