Overview – Southern Ocean Lodge
One of Australia’s finest luxury hotels, the Southern Ocean Lodge embodies all the things that make Kangaroo Island the ultimate travel destination.
Carefully constructed to blend into a rugged limestone ridge, the Southern Ocean Lodge is comprised of just twenty-one contemporary suites with unobstructed views of the wilderness and crashing waves of Hanson Bay. Life here revolves around the Great Room, whose floor-to-ceiling windows and suspended fireplace invite guests to read, relax or refuel while watching the never-ending performance put on by unbridled forces of nature. Kangaroo Island’s landscapes are never static with wildflowers and baby animals to see in spring and summer, nesting penguins in autumn and whale watching in winter.
The lodge’s twenty-one lavish suites are encased in glass, so you always feel connected with your environment. Luxe bed linens and a large private deck with a day bed invite you to lay back and look for playful dolphins in the Southern Ocean below. An in-suite snack bar offers a range of South Australian refreshments, while backpacks are provided for inevitable daily expeditions.
Meals are contemporary Australian, with an emphasis on local island and South Australian seasonal produce. A well-stocked open bar and walk-in cellar round out the epicurean experience. The Baudin Lounge is a peaceful place to digest your dinner, with its comprehensive library of reference books, games and movies. You might also swim in the heated wet-edge pool, or stroll over to the Southern Spa, set in its own serene pavilion, which offers a range of treatments inspired by Aboriginal Dreamtime.
A typical day out on Kangaroo Island might consist of a guided tour of Seal Bay where colonies of sea lions and New Zealand fur seals frolic, followed by a leisurely coastal walk, then canapés and kangaroo-watching until sunset. A visit to the lonesome Cape du Couedic lighthouse, Admirals Arch and the surreal Remarkable Rocks are highly recommended. The lodge can arrange bespoke experiences also, from kayaking the South West River to a nocturnal tour of the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Southern Ocean Lodge welcomes children aged 10 and over.
