Thala Beach

A little piece of paradise, Thala Beach is a private nature reserve and eco resort on the doorstep to the Great Barrier Reef.

Situated on a private headland just south of Port Douglas, Thala Beach Nature Reserve offers deluxe accommodation amongst 145 acres of native wilderness and private beachfront. Guests can enjoy activities including guided nature walks, star gazing and informative talks by local experts from the Kuku Yalangi aboriginal community. The resort’s treetops restaurant has breathtaking views and offers fresh locally sourced produce from the Coral Sea and the Atherton Tablelands.

Thala Beach has achieved the highest level of Advanced Eco Certification and is a member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. The guest suites and bungalows are secluded amongst tropical forest filled with birds and butterflies, and offer views of the sea, or forested hills. Each has an ensuite bathroom, king size bed and private balcony or terrace. There is also a 2-bedroom bungalow for 4 people which is ideal for families or friends travelling together.

At the heart of the hotel is the elevated wooden pavilion open to the surrounding forest, housing a restaurant, lounges and reading room, as well as a shop, adventure desk and art gallery. In the grounds are also two romantic freeform outdoor swimming pools in a natural setting, with sun beds and a cocktail bar. The private 2 kilometre long beach is perfect for relaxing morning walks and beach picnics. (Note that swimming is not possible between November and May due to the presence of marine stingers in Queensland waters).

Guests can enjoy complimentary on-site experiences including flora and fauna tours with the rangers, and the unique Coconut Odyssey to learn about and taste everything to do with coconuts! At extra cost there is guided kayaking, spa treatments and massage and local tours to the Daintree Rainforest, the Tableland region and the Great Barrier Reef (tours should be booked in advance).

Thala Beach Reserve is just 10 minutes drive from Port Douglas, the departure point for Great Barrier Reef tours. Renowned for its laid back sophistication, the town also has some stylish boutiques as well as great cafes and restaurants. A regular shuttle bus departs from Thala reception to Port Douglas.
