Freycinet Lodge

The environmentally sensitive Freycinet Lodge provides a close-up experience of Freycinet National Park while leaving little more than footprints on the virtually untouched environment.

Envision a smattering of low-slung timber cabins scattered beneath native tea trees, bordered on one side by the dusky pink Hazards peaks and on the other by the crystalline waters of Great Oyster Bay. This is Freycinet Lodge. Here, you can spend long days exploring white sand beaches, swimming in secret coves or sampling the Freycinet Peninsula’s noteworthy cool-climate wines. When you’ve worked up an appetite out in the fresh air, refuel with a hearty meal and local brew at The Bay Restaurant or Richardson’s Bistro. Hazards Bar and Lounge is ideal for a nightcap by a roaring fire.

Surrounded by thick vegetation, the one and two-room timber cabins are connected by a series of elevated boardwalks, which protect delicate undergrowth from being trampled underfoot. With heating and cooling, the comfortable villas also come with fridges, tea and coffee-making facilities. When you aren’t curled up listening to birdsong on your private balcony, sign up for some of the activities available (extra cost) at Freycinet Lodge, which include wine tasting, sea-kayaking or a catamaran cruise around Wineglass Bay.

Freycinet Lodge is surrounded by phenomenal walking trails; a short but steep climb along a rocky track takes you to a stunning lookout. From here, an additional 2.5 hour circuit lets you dip your toes in the glassy waters and silica sands of much-photographed Wineglass Bay. Surrounding Freycinet National Park is rich in wildlife – keep your eyes peeled for potbellied Tasmanian pademelons, wallabies and wombats. Wedge-tailed eagles often scour the ocean for prey, and you might even see seals, dolphins or whales.
