A hidden gem, 700km kilometres north-east of Sydney, is the breathtaking, World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island.
Home to a wealth of treasures that you can explore at your own pace either on foot or by bicycle, the island is a joy to experience. Staying at beautiful Capella Lodge – a Luxury Lodges of Australia member – the property boasts an enviable location in the secluded south of the island. There are also just 9 suites, ensuring an intimate and personalised experience in an idyllic setting. The airy, open plan bar, restaurant and lounge have floor to ceiling windows to bring the outside in and serve only the finest and freshest produce from Lord Howe Island and New South Wales. When not out exploring, relax and curl up on the terrace with a book, swim in the infinity pool or savour a drink as the sun sets over the sea.
The protected bays surrounding the island are filled with kaleidoscopic coral that offer superb snorkelling opportunities. Ned’s Beach, one of the island’s many postcard-perfect beaches is a favourite, popular for beachcombing, reef-snorkelling and fish-feeding. Classified a Sanctuary Zone and a Special Purpose Zone, it offers the unique opportunity to hand-feed fish – a must-do activity when visiting the island.
Mount Gower, the tallest mountain at 875 metres above sea-level, offers incredible vistas over the crescent shaped island below – a highlight for hiking enthusiasts. Rated as one of Australia’s best day walks, it is a challenging hike along rugged terrain and unmarked tracks that can only be undertaken with a licensed guide (prices on request). There are plenty of other day-hikes available to smaller hilltops as well as secluded beaches.
Before winging your way to the island, spend 2-nights at the Four Seasons Sydney. Located in the city’s heart, with Circular Quay at its doorstep, the hotel offers views directly onto the Harbour Bridge and iconic Sydney Opera House. Expect elegant guestrooms, state-of-the-art facilities and silver-service that make the Four Seasons one of the world’s leading hotel groups.
