Overview – The George
The George is a multi-award winning boutique hotel with an impressive one-to-one staff to guest ratio, overlooking peaceful Hagley Park and the tranquil Avon River in the heart of pretty Christchurch.
A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, The George is a haven of modern style and comfort with all the attractions of South Island’s capital at its doorstep. Christchurch might have sustained serious damage during successive earthquakes in previous years but it is today a forward-looking city, with many interesting modern structures replacing damaged or destroyed buildings. From this hotel, you can easily walk to the Christchurch Cathedral ruins and see its colourful replacement, stroll the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and visit Canterbury Museum. The fantastic Orana Wildlife Park and International Antarctic Centre are both also just a short drive from this boutique property.
Rooms are sumptuous, with custom made furniture and modern ensuite bathrooms featuring underfloor heating. Every mod-con is present, from complimentary Wi-Fi to cable TV, plus there are little extras that set this hotel apart, such as an in-room workout channel, generous bath amenities, safes with built in power points to charge electronic devices and opening windows. Guests have access to an offsite gym and there is complimentary mountain bike hire. Take advantage of the lovely climate, cycling scenic Summit Road to Lyttleton Harbour or by teeing off at Hagley Golf Club, Canterbury’s oldest course.
When it’s time for food, The George provides two options: 50 Bistro, a relaxed, family-friendly restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Pescatore, one of the country’s best contemporary restaurants. The latter turns dining into an experience, combining classic fare with the latest culinary techniques. Menus are expertly matched with vintages from the comprehensive wine list, and all meals are served in a minimalist setting overlooking Hagley Park.

Queenstown, in the spectacular Otago region south-east of the island, is an all-seasons destination, with skiing a popular pastime in winter and water-based activities such as boating and fishing in warmer weather. The lakeside town is also gateway to Milford Sound, an achingly beautiful fjord with sheer rock walls and numerous marvellous waterfalls.
